Descendants of John "Higgins"

Generation One

1. John S (Higgins)1 Gibson (187) (unknown author, 1870 MISSOURI, U.S. CENSUS (n.p.: n.pub., n.d.), Harrison county, Missouri census record.) (Boone county, Indiana marriage book: Mary Jane Smith and John Gibson are listed as married February 1850, in Boone county, Indiana, . Hereinafter cited as Boone County Indiana Marriage Book.) was born circa 1828 at Eel River Township, Hendricks, Indiana (Marsha Vedder, "E mail correspondance from Marsha Vedder-Higgins' researcher for Boone county, Indiana. 1/14/99," e-mail message from unknown author e-mail (Boone Co., Indiana) to Susan Williams, 1/14/1999. Hereinafter cited as "E mail from Marsha Vedder.").
John S (Higgins) Gibson (187) married Mary Jane Smith (16), daughter of James Smith (15) and ?? (--?--) (21), on 14 Feb 1850 at Jamestown, Boone, Indiana (I found the marriage of Mary Jane Smith and John S Gibson on the Ancestry.com site, Boone Co., Indiana.

Many sources have Mary Jane Smith as married to John S Gibson. He is the son of Jesse Gibson, grandson of Archibald. They moved to Harrison county, Indiana c. 1854 ish. James is listed as born in Indiana(we think his birthdate is 1853, but other sources suggest 1851?). Martha is listed as born in MIssouri in 1854. Therefore they must have moved in that time period. Jesse was in Worth county, Missouri-right next door to Harrison. They are buried in a cemetery that is right on the Harrison/Worth county border. I believe Mary Jane moved back to Indiana c1864 or so, probably after John S died. He is listed as buried in Kroger cemetery on the Worth/Harrison Co, Missouri border. This is the same cemetery that Jesse and Molly Gibson are buried) (Indiana Marriages 1850, online www.ancestry.com, Date of Marriage between John S Gibson and Mary Jane Smith. Hereinafter cited as Indiana Marriages 1850.) (Seventh Census of the United States U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census,, National Archives, Washington, D. C., Microfilm Publication M-432, Mary Jane's link to James Smith and to John S Gibson.) (James Jesse Higgens Obit, Green City Press Obituaries., Green City, July 25, 1935, 8, Birthplace and parents of James Jesse Higgens. Hereinafter cited as Obituary James Jesse Higgens.).

John S (Higgins) Gibson (187) died on 7 Aug 1862 at Washington Township, Harrison, Missouri (John is buried in Koger Cemetery, located on the border of Washington Township(Harrison Co, MO) and Worth County Missouri. He is buried next to Jesse and Molly Gibson) (Val Fawcett, "Val Fawcett," e-mail message from valfawcett@comcast.net (Virginia) to Susan Williams, 2004, Val Fawcett has his death date as July 8, 1862. I believe that he is not John Henry Gibson's father. Hereinafter cited as "E Mail Interview w/Val Fawcett.").

(From the census data described below, several things stand out to me.
     1) Mary Jane Gibson is listed in 2 different households, Jesse Gibson of Hendricks Co, Indiana and James Smith's household of Boone Co, Indiana. This appears to be a discrepancy, but of course that depends on who was giving out information on the family. If James Smith was asked about his children, it is possible that he mentioned Mary? That is pure speculation, but the discrepancy has been noted.
2)In John S Gibson's household of 1860, the person that we would suspect as James J Gibson, born c1853-apparently appears as James G Gibson, born 1851. That is a discrepancy that has bothered me since I found the census record. There are 2 places in James Jesse Higgins' records where I have found a reference to a birth date of 1851. They are his 1930 census record of Buchanan County and his death certificate. Both of these sources have his birth date as June of 1851. In addition he lists his parents as both born in Kentucky on his 1930 census. If you compare the data on Mary Jane Smith, she is listed as born in Kentucky on a couple of census records. I have suspected that her family moved to Boone Co, Indiana right around her birth from Kentucky. That could explain the discrepancies. It appears that John was born in Indiana, so cannot explain the Kentucky reference. He was reportedly born in 1828 and I have found a reference to Archibald Gibson, of Hendricks co., Indiana, who applied for a land grant in Hendricks with a date of 1829. It appears that the Gibson's were in Hendricks around the time of John's birth. I believe it is more accurate to place his birth in Indiana

).
John S (Higgins) Gibson (187) appears as John S, age 22, in the census of 23 Sep 1850 at Eel River Township, Hendricks, Indiana, in the household of Jesse Gibson (8) NOTE: John S is listed as Dwelling 799, but family 808-listed with Mary J Gibson, age 16. John and Mary Jane married Feb 14, 1850. He is listed as the head of his home, but in the household of Jesse
(unknown author, 1850 Hendricks county, Indiana (n.p.: n.pub., n.d.), Dwelling 799, Family 808

John S (Higgins) Gibson (187), age 31, appears as head of household in the census of on 6 Jan 1860 in at Washington Township, Post Office-Jay, Harrison, Missouri, with James Jesse Gibson Higgins (174), Mary Jane Smith (16), Martha M(Mattie) (Higgins) Gibson (1019), Mary L (Mollie) Gibson (1322), and Nancy Gibson (3987)
(In this household are the following individuals:
Household is listed as below:
John S Gibson, age 31 born Indiana
Mary J , age 26 born Indiana
James G, age 9 born Indiana
Martha M, age 6 born Missouri
Mary, age 4 born Missouri
Nancy, age 4/12 born Missouri) (June 1, 1860 Federal Filmed Census,, Harrison County, Missouri Washington Township, Ancestry.com, Household is listed as below:
John S Gibson, age 31 born Indiana
Mary J , age 26 born Indiana
James G, age 9 born Indiana
Martha M, age 6 born Missouri
Mary, age 4 born Missouri
Nancy, age 4/12 born Missouri.).

As of 15 Aug 2007, he was also known as John S (Higgins) Gibson (187) Regarding the individual previously known as "John Higgins", it is not known where John Higgins was born. As of the publishing of this data, I have not been able to find out anything about this man, or if he even exsisted. So far, the only knowledge we have of him is through family lore.

He is listed as buried in Koger cemetery on the Worth/Harrison Co, Missouri border. This is the same cemetery that Jesse and Molly Gibson are buried (Letter from Irene Helms (Prineville, Oregon) to Susan Williams, 1999;, Irene describes her knowledge about her grandparents in the following manner. She says that her great grandfather was John Higgins, and Irish imigrant who came to America because of the Irish Potato Famine of 1845. She had searched for years and years for any sign of this person, but could never find any information about him. She had even hired a genealogist in Boone Co., Indiana. However, they could find no information on them as well.
I believe that there probably was no "Irish Immigrant", but was John S Gibson all along. See information found on Martha "Mattie" Gibson Smith. She was reportedly a full sister to James Jesse, so her father would have been John Higgins as well. It states on her death certificate, that her father was John Gibson and her mother, Jane Smith.).
Children of John S (Higgins)1 Gibson (187) and Mary Jane Smith (16) were as follows:

Generation Two

2. James Jesse2 Higgins (174) (John1 Gibson) (Susan Williams (?), Record of Sales of Land 1862-1875 Worth Co., Missouri (n.p.: n.pub., n.d.), To Date: Will use both surnames until reference material found to resolve the name issue.) (From many sources we are in agreement that our great grandfather, James Jesse Higgins, was born in Jamestown, Indiana. He was listed as born on June 23, 1853, both in his obituary and on his gravestone. Depending on which piece of information you go by, his birth year is either 1851 or 1853).
James Jesse Higgins (174) married Mary Alice Marshall (175) on 14 Oct 1875 at Poplar Bluff, Butler, Missouri (One of my sources is my cousin, Judy Guiles. Judy's father, Claude, always stated that Mary Alice and J J were married around 1877, and that he found her in Poplar Bluff, Mo, where they married. To find another theory on their marriage, see the "Alternate Marriage" information listed below) (Interview with Reta J Higgins (12 W Harrison, Green City, Mo), by Susan Williams, Many occasions.) (Ibid., As told to me by my Uncle Jim Higgins 11/22/98.). (
Alternate Marriage Theory: The official story is that Mary Alice Marshall and James Jesse Higgins were married c 1877 in southern Missouri. I believe they were either married or were considered "common" law married. If our reference information is true, it appears that sometime between 1880 and 1882, James Jesse Gibson possibly became involved with Mary "L" Hess nee Marshall. James "J" Gibson is listed as a head of household in 1880, Worth co, Mo. Paulus and Mary Hess are listed as "farmer" and "taking care of home" in that same census. Paulus Hess and Mary "L" Marshall were married in October, 1876) (Marriage of Paulus Hess and Mary "L" Marshall: Marriage of Paulus Hess and Mary Marshall. Hereinafter cited as Nodaway co. Marriage October, 1876.). He died on 30 Jul 1935 at St. Joseph, Missouri, at age 82 (This is from the obituary in the Green City Press-dated 8-8-1935. States that James Jesse Higgins was born in Jamestown, Indiana. Married Mary Alice Marshall on Oct 10, 1878. Was survived by daughter Mrs. Lula Shelton-Beacon Iowa, Son-Bert, Roberts Iowa. etc. see story-about James Jesse Higgins) (Obituary James Jesse Higgens, July 25, 1935, 8, Obituary was in the Green City Press dated August 8, 1935. On page #8.).

(From the Census Data listed below, several things stand out to me
First of all, when we look at John S Gibson's 1860 Harrison co, Mo census we would expect to see James J Higgins, b 1853, not James G Gibson, b 1851. That is the first discrepancy that appears. We also cannot find a James J Higgins in the 1870 or 1880 census. We can find a James J Gibson in the 1880 Worth Co., Missouri census. However, the birth year seems to be incorrect. This individual is listed as several years too young to be James J Higgins or James G Gibson. Even though he appears too young, I do believe that this is probably the same person. The 40 acres that James J Gibson owns is right next door to some property owned by Mary (Johnson) Gibson, who would be his grandmother. From Worth county tax records, it appears that James J Gibson bought the propery around 1872. He is found on the 1876 plat map as owner to this propery. The property is not too far away from the Koger cemetery, which is found on the Worth Co/Harrison Co, Missouri border. Apparently, according to those same tax records, James J Gibson abandoned his farm sometime in the months before his taxes were due in December, 1881

).

James Jesse Gibson Higgins (174) appears as James G Gibson, age 9 in the census of on 6 Jan 1860 at Washington Township, Post Office-Jay, Harrison, Missouri, in the the household of John S (Higgins) Gibson (187) (June 1, 1860 Federal Filmed Census, , Harrison County, Missouri Washington Township, Household is listed as below:
John S Gibson, age 31 born Indiana
Mary J , age 26 born Indiana
James G, age 9 born Indiana
Martha M, age 6 born Missouri
Mary, age 4 born Missouri
Nancy, age 4/12 born Missouri.).

(1870 US Census Record: As of this publishing, James Jesse Higgins or James J Gibson has not found on any 1870 census record). (

From the "Record of Sales of Land 1862-1875", I found a listing of the land sale of Section 35, Township 65, to J J Gibson by ?A Gibson. The name of the sellar was not as clear. It appeared to be _?A Gibson. I'm not sure who that is) (Record of Sales of Land 1862-1875 Worth Co., Missouri: Record of Sale of Land to JJ Gibson, 1-12-1872, unknown repository, unknown repository address. Hereinafter cited as Worth Co., Record of Sales of Land 1862-1875.).

(

Missing 1880 U S Census Record of J J Higgins: Even though family history suggests that J J Higgens was living in Lineville, Missouri during the 1880 time period, James Jesse Higgins has not been found on any 1880 census record, either Mercer Co, Missouri or Wayne Co., Iowa).

James J Gibson -age 24, appears as head of household in the census of 12 Jun 1880 in at Allen Township, Worth, Missouri, with Paulus and Mary Hess

      (US Census-1920
James Jesse was not living with the family by 1920. We are not sure where he was living, but he occasionally would show up-according to family lore. He eventually lost contact with the family altogether, until he died. They were sent a wire of his death and a couple of Grandpa's brothers went to pick up his body in St. Joseph. According to June Allen, a wake and funeral was held in Grandma Mary Alice's home for him. She remembers the funeral).

1930 Buchanan County Census:James Jesse Higgins (174) -age 80, appears as an inmate of the "Buchanan county Home for Paupers" in a census dated April 26, 1930. Using an age of 80, would make his birth year around 1850. He lists himself as a "widower", and states that he was born in Indiana. He lists both his parents as born in Kentucky.NOTE: at various times both John S Gibson and Mary Jane Smith were listed as born in Kentucky-see the 1850 census(Boone Co., Indiana)

(4-26-1930 Buchanan County Home for Paupers enumeration,, Printed Poplulation Schedule Sheet, Ancestry.com, Buchanan County Home for Paupers

Individual Narrative: (My grandmother, Reta (Moots) Higgins was a great informant for information dealing with her in-laws. When my grandparents first were married, they lived for a time, with great Grandma Mary Alice. When my father was just a baby a fire destroyed my grandfather's restaurant. My grandmother and father just barely escaped, the only possession saved was the quilt my Dad was wrapped in.
Since the home and restaurant were destroyed, Dad's family moved in with Grandma Mary Alice. During this time period I believe my grandmother received alot of information from Mary Alice. I believe most of the family history was gleaned by this source, Mary Alice to Grandma Reta. I'm not sure how much was told to the younger siblings, ie Grandpa Bill and his brothers-they didn't seem to know a whole lot.
In the 60's, my grandparents, along with my Aunt Donna Jean, made a great pilgrimage out west, to visit the Western Uncles. The last time many of them would see other. During the trip, one of my cousins inquired of my Grandma Reta, "why do we know so little information?" Grandma replied, "When stories are bad, they aren't often told!" I believe that sums up our delima with this family! Whatever information, real or fabricated, that Grandma Mary Alice told to her children, I believe there is enough there to find out the truth-we just have to "ferret" it out of the reference material we find).

Reference: Have added evidence linking J J Gibson to J J Higgens. See the following:1) John S and Mary Jane(Smith) Gibson's marriage record-February 14, 18502) Hendricks Co., Indiana and Boone Co., Indiana 1850 census records3) Harrison Co., Missouri 1860 census records4) Worth Co., Missouri 1880 census records5) Paulus and Mary (Marshall) Hess' marriage record-October, 18766) Martha M (Gibson) Smith's obituary and death certificate (Susan Williams (?), Record of Sales, Found J J Gibson on 1880 census. 2) Found obituary of Mattie Gibson Smith, which states that she was survived by her brothers John H of Anderson, Indiana and James Gibson of Missouri.
3) Found Marriage license of Paulus Hess and Mary "L" Marshall-in Octoboer 1876-Nodaway County, Missouri.) ( I believe that James J Gibson and James J Higgens are probably the same person.).
Children of James Jesse2 Higgins (174) and Mary Alice Marshall (175) were as follows:
There were no children of James Jesse2 Higgins (174) and the unknown spouse mentioned above.

6. John H2 Gibson (1021) (John1) (Obituary James Jesse Higgens, July 25, 1935, 8, James Jesse Higgins Obituary.) was born on 17 Sep 1864 at Indiana (unknown author, East Maplewood Cemetery records (n.p.: n.pub., n.d.).). William Keep, age 5, born Indiana, step-grandson.).

Individual Narrative: (As of this publishing, I have had several conversations with various descendants of both John and Effie. The first such conversation was with William Keep Jr., widow-Nina Keep. Apparently "Bill" didn't have much good to say about either his father, William Sr., or Uncle John. Apparently Bill was abandoned by his father, to Uncle John. Uncle John apparenty used Bill Jr. has close to slave labor around the home. Therefore, Bill was not a big fan of his family, even though Uncle John did take him in.

Another conversation I had was with John's Grandchildren, children of his daughter, Dolly Mae. They apparently weren't aware that their mother was buried next to Aunt Mattie(Martha Smith). In fact, Dolly Mae is buried in the plot that was originally reserved for Mattie's daughter, Wanda. This was pointed out to me by the West Maplewood cemetery secretary. Apparently it is written in the records. Besides the fact they didn't know they were related to the Smiths, the younger children weren't allowed contact with Uncle John. Apparently when their mother died, in 1926, Uncle John tried to persuade their father, Walter Waitman, to put the younger children in the orphanage. Walter took exception to this and decided that the children should not have anything to do with Uncle John! I think he was probably afraid they would end up on his doorstep, as had so many of his other grandchildren
