Note: added information sent to me from Judy Downen includes book information compiled by the 'Descendants of Timothy Downen.' The book is entitled 'History of the Downen Family 1777-1970'., Document: History of the Downen Family 1777-1970 (n.p.: 1974 by AR Bradley, n.d.), From Book Titled 'The History of the Downen Family 1777-1970.') was born between 1740 and 1745. He married Mary Elizabeth Smith (1037). He died circa 1802 at Muhlenbenberg, Kentucky (From E-mail(Carol Bingham June 28,1997)states that: Job was his first child born 1765 or 68 in Granville county. I assume was south Carolina. also Columbus South Carolina Archives a book 'Index to Memorials and Land Titles 1674-1776' under Royal Grants Vol 15 page 292, is recorded that Josiah Downing on Feb 13,1768 was granted by King George III of Great Britain 150 acres in Granville Co on Parks Creek. Grants were also made in the same area to his brothers James John and Thomas.

Josiah Sr. served in the Revolutionary War between 1780-1782 under the command of General Pickens, SC militia. he was badly hurt when knocked from his horse while on detachment under Col. Hays.-Source 'Militia Duty, Reference -AA2014, pages 1U through 2U, from SC Archives.' His Revolutionary War service has been established, in 1969 a descendant was admitted to membership in the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution No. 547976.

Muhlenberg Circuit Court Sept 21, 1807 by Josiah, John, Job, Timothy, James and William. William sold in 1810 and was listed as an early settler in Posey Co, Indiana. Timothy was there prior to 1815, per 'History and Directory of Posey county' by W P Leonard.
