Your "One Stop Horse Shop
 

The McLaughlin Western Store located two miles west of Paris, MO on Highway 24 is owned by Mike & Julann McLaughlin.  Julann jokingly calls it "a one stop horse shop."  It's easy to see what she means since there is also a training and breeding facility where horses of all kinds, abilities, and ages can be purchased as well.  Mike runs the horse business which was started in 1972.

The couple have two children.  Elder son, Jay also trains out of this facility.  Curt, who attends college, plans to show this summer also.

Julann taught school for thirteen years before the western store was established in 1981. Mike & Julann decided that they wanted a specialty store which would not be found in most places.  Not to say that everything is expensive, because they cater to the trail rider, 4-Her, rodeo enthusiast, and showman, as well as the backyard horseman.

Julann carries a wide selection of saddles and tack.  Her favorites are Circle Y, Dale Chavez, and Hereford.  "These companies have wonderful reputations of standing behind their merchandise. This is extremely important in this business," she states.

The store is widely known for its unusual gift items and wonderful selection of jewelry.  Julann explains, "We travel all over the country picking up new lines that we think our customers will enjoy.  It has proven to be very successful for us."  Recently, western furniture was added.  When it comes to artwork, everyone enjoys sculptures: Tim Cox, Diana Beach, Kim McElroy and others' paintings.  Limited edition shadow boxes are also available.

"When it comes to clothes because of our size, we mostly leave that to the big boys," says Julann.  "The exception to that is show clothes. We are Hobby Horse dealers and also carry other brands of new and used clothes.  We help people get ready for the show ring whether it's the first show or the World."  Custom chaps are available but McLaughlin's always stock chaps in many colors to fit all sizes.  Hats, belts, gloves, tuxedo shirts, slinkies, and children's boots are available, too.

McLaughlin's ship daily all over the country.  They have sold saddles to actors, Patrick Duffy and William Shatner.  Recently, Martha Josey, barrel racer and clinician, made a purchase of several signs and pictures at the Missouri Equine Fair.

"Our goal has always been to help people in any way we can and to be honest and above board with everyone.  If our customers aren't happy, then we aren't happy."

Everyone is invited to the Mclaughlin's annual Open House on May 7 - 9. There will be sales galore in the store, door prizes, sales reps. available, a fashion show, stallion review and tours, eight free seminars on various topics including health and nutrition, breeding, and training.  A barn dance will also be held on Saturday, May 8 at 8:00 p.m. with a DJ.
